Members of Congress are starting to express concerns over whether the IRS will be ready for next 2020 tax season (in 2021) – as it is still processing millions of pieces of mail that went unaddressed for months during the COVID-19 pandemic. Members of the House Ways and Means Committee sent a letter to the IRS Commissioner asking him to answer whether the IRS is prepared for the upcoming tax filing season due to the current backlog. Members of Congress continues to hear from their base on the IRS inefficiencies – from those constituents who believe their tax returns are ‘missing’ and others who wait for much needed refunds. It appears the processing of 2019 tax returns likely will extend into 2021. The end of the calendar year is normally when the IRS develops its tax forms and publications, prepares and tests its information systems technology, and trains staffs to man its taxpayer assistance centers. That includes the processing of remaining Economic Impact Payments to those who have not yet received it. To date, the IRS Commissioner has not replied to the concerns of Congress.
